Go online to take the stress out of your big move...

If you’re moving house, head online to take the stress out of your big move…

Do your research

Are you relocating to an unfamiliar area? If the answer is yes, then research is key! Discover online how the local schools rank, check out the crime figures for the area and view the neighbourhood’s curb appeal - all with the click of a button.

Discover what’s on offer

Online blogs, regional news outlets, review sites and community posts are a great way of unearthing the facilities and amenities of your chosen village, town or city. Seek recommendations for a reputable gym, enrol on a course or get the low-down on the nearby bars, cafes and restaurants. Whatever your interests, there’s bound to be a way that you can become actively involved in your new community.

Liaise with the local Council

For Council Tax purposes, you will need to inform your local Council that you’re moving. Instead of spending time you don’t have on the phone, simply report your change of address online - you’ll find that most local Council websites have a dedicated section for this. It’s also beneficial to consult a Council website if you want to determine Council Tax bands and charges.

Update your details

Moving house means correspondence with all your utility suppliers past and present. Avoid being passed from pillar to post and update your details and/or submit your meter readings online. Don’t forget to amend the details on your TV license and driving license too, and arrange with Royal Mail for your post to be redirected to your new address. Anyone who has just moved house in the past few months or is new to an area should update their name, address and other details on the Electoral Register, otherwise you could find that it is too late to vote in the next local or General Election.

Check your broadband speed

Of course, none of the above would be possible without an excellent Internet connection to get you online, and fast! If you're moving to or within West Yorkshire or York, visit the get-fibre.co.uk webpage to see if you are eligible for superfast fibre optic broadband and learn how a speedier internet connection can benefit you. Alternatively, you can check what other broadband speeds and deals you can get from your location by using the Openreach Availability Checker.
